HOW THE WATERHOLE WORKS
What is The Waterhole?
The Waterhole is a message board that works exactly the same as many other on the www. You publish your opinion, or question, and it will be immediately visible to other visitors at the Waterhole. Being an open forum, others will possibly reply to your message by exposing their own viewpoints.
To publish a message, go back to The Waterhole and scroll down. At the bottom of the page you will find a form to publish your message.
Any kind... as long as they are related to the topics treated here, namely Kenya, Africa, African wildlife, safaris,... Of course, opinions that can offend others are not allowed, including any kind of violent, insulting or pornographic messages. Pure advertising is not allowed either, even if it is related to the relevant topics. This is not the place.
To read a message, simply click on it in the message list.
Once you have accessed the message page (after clicking on it in the list), you will find a form to publish your reply in The Waterhole. If, conversely, what you want is to reply directly to that person by e-mail, click on his or her name in the message page and a new e-mail message will open. Of course, this will only work if the name of the person is in blue and underlined. Otherwise, it means that the person did not provide an e-mail address. Important: when answering to another person's posting, look at the date of the original message. If it was published one year back, it is unlikely that the author will ever read your posting. It seems obvious, but it isn't. There are some cases of this at The Waterhole.
It's not the place. The Waterhole is an open forum, not an information bureau, that's what the e-mail is meant for. If you wish to make me a question directly, write to me from the contact page. I always reply, sooner or later, to all e-mail messages I receive. But I don't usually respond to messages posted at The Waterhole (though I do read everything published). Do not understand it as a lack of hospitality. When The Waterhole started, I used to reply, but it became "all ask, one answers". It was not the idea, it was a bit boring and I believe it also made others refrain from posting different ideas and viewpoints. So now I prefer to keep off.
Only if you type it in the field provided when you write your message. The only required fields are name, subject and obviously the message text itself. Actually it's not me who decides, since the script that controls the message board is a service from the host I use, thus I have no control over this. Regarding the author of this website, you can publish your e-mail address without any concerns, I have a privacy policy that I scrupulously respect. Albeit, I have no control over whatever use other third parties could make of the e-mail addresses published here. For this and other reasons, I do recommend to publish the e-mail address, so that we can contact each other, but I advise not to publish any personal data at The Waterhole, leaving this for the direct e-mail channel.
Your computer stores the pages visited in a type of memory called cache. When you revisit a page, instead of reading the page from the web, your computer retrieves it from this memory, in order to make an economic use of the net. For this reason, when you publish a message and then go back to the list, your computer shows the previous version of the page, in which your message was still not included. To update the page, click on the "Refresh" or "Update" button on the top navigation bar of your browser.
In principle, indefinitely. Should the list become too long to be handy, I would create a separate file containing older messages.
I do. I am Javier Yanes, the author of this website. The technical stuff is provided by the host I use, so I have no control over this.
